We are struggling to solve a similar (not quite the same) mystery of semi-estrangement of our older son. I think it has something to do with the state of his mental health but it is hard to tell as our communication is very limited. I’m so grateful to you for sharing your story. I had no idea this kind of things are so widespread. Not that it helps to solve the mystery of our son's semi-estrangement (at least not right away), but it gives some hope, besides the helpful links and quotes.
